Hi Al; As you know, the Savage has an aluminum alloy air cooled engine, therefore much of the normal noise that is muted by liquid cooling can be easier heard by the rider. Follow the maintenance specs and keep the valves reasonably within the .08 to .13 mm or .003 to .005" and you will be "safe". The clearance is really not that critical as long as there is enough to allow the valves to close completely. An old rule of thumb is "if you can hear them, they are not burning". Frank M
